GOBO FAQS

Quick answers to the most common questions about custom gobos like sizing, materials, ordering & setup. If you're unsure about your projector, see our Gobo Size & Compatibility Guide or contact us and we'll match it for you.

Do you make glass gobos?

We currently manufacture metal (stainless steel) gobos in Tualatin, Oregon. Metal is durable and budget-friendly; the only visual difference is that designs use small "bridges," like a stencil, to hold interior shapes. If you need color or photo-level detail in the future, contact us about options.

What's the difference between regular stainless steel and black-coated?

Projection quality is the same. Some customers prefer the black-coated finish for presentation (e.g., gifting to a couple) because it looks more polished when not in use.

What file formats do you accept?

We can work with almost any format. Vector files are ideal (AI, PDF, EPS, SVG). If you only have a JPG or PNG, we can use it as long as the resolution is high enough (ideally 300 dpi at final gobo size). Outline fonts and remove special effects where possible.

What's the standard gobo size?

There isn't one "standard." Different brands and fixtures use different sizes. We maintain a large compatibility database—if you share your projector's brand and model, we'll match the correct size for you. You can also check our Gobo Size & Compatibility Guide.

What do the measurements in a gobo size mean?

Gobo sizes are listed with two numbers: outer diameter and maximum image (etch) diameter. For example, 26.8 mm × 24 mm means the disc is 26.8 mm across, and the projected design can be up to 24 mm within that.

I don't see my gobo size in your options. Can you cut it?

Yes. We can cut any gobo size. If your exact size isn't listed, choose "Other" and enter your dimensions. If you don't know the size, just provide the projector brand/model and we'll take it from there.

What is a digital copy?

A digital copy is a high-resolution JPG or PNG of your design that you can use with a digital projector (for example, connecting a computer or USB drive to a video/LED projector). It's great for studios and venues that want a projected look without a physical gobo.

When will my order arrive?

$39.95 metal gobos typically ship the next business day after artwork approval (24-hour turn). Delivery time depends on the shipping method you choose at checkout. The free option (First-Class Mail) usually takes up to 5 business days in transit within the U.S. Faster paid options are available at checkout.
